Free energy check for care homes
Is your care home paying too much for energy?
A care home runs heating, hot water, laundry and kitchens day and night, all year round. We compare your energy costs with current market prices, and then a specialist will ring to explain where you stand.

Where a care home's energy goes
Few businesses use energy the way a care home does, so your specialist looks at your rates with the way your home actually runs in mind.
Heating and hot water
Residents need warm rooms and hot water around the clock, every day of the year.
Laundry
Commercial washers and dryers run for much of the day.
Kitchens
The kitchen turns out three meals a day, plus everything in between.
Lighting and equipment
Corridor lighting, lifts, call systems and care equipment are never switched off.
Three things worth checking
The right VAT rate
Because residents live there, a care home's energy can qualify for a lower rate of VAT instead of the standard 20%, and be excluded from the Climate Change Levy. Most suppliers ask for a VAT declaration before they apply this, so it's worth checking that your bills reflect it.
Your renewal window
With so much else to manage, it's easy for a contract end date to slip past. If you miss the renewal window, you can be moved onto out-of-contract rates, which are usually higher.
Contracts across several homes
If you run more than one home, each one may be on a different contract with its own end date, so it's worth reviewing them all together.

Questions care homes ask us
Can a care home pay less VAT on energy?
Usually, yes. HMRC treats care homes as residential accommodation, so their energy can qualify for a lower rate of VAT and be excluded from the Climate Change Levy. Most suppliers ask for a VAT declaration showing how much is used for residents, and your specialist will check whether your bills reflect it.
We run several homes. Can you help?
Yes. Tell us about each home and your specialist can go through every contract with you.
Will switching affect our residents?
No. Your supply stays on during the switch, so nothing changes for residents. The only thing that changes is the company that bills you.
Is it really free?
Yes. You never pay Energybench anything. If you decide to switch, Assured Energy pays our fee.
