Free energy check for hotels and accommodation
Is your hotel or holiday let paying too much for energy?
Guest rooms, kitchens, laundry and hot water all use energy, and demand rises and falls through the year. We compare your energy costs with current market prices, and then a specialist will ring to explain where you stand.

Where accommodation energy goes
Guests expect warmth, hot water and light the moment they arrive, whatever the hour, so much of your energy use carries on around the clock.
Heating and hot water
Showers, baths and radiators need to be ready whenever a guest wants them.
Kitchens
The kitchen runs from early breakfasts through to late service.
Laundry
Many hotels wash and dry bedding and towels on site.
Rooms and public areas
Lounges, corridors and rooms all need lighting and heating, including rooms that sit empty between guests.
Three things worth checking
The right VAT rate for what you run
HMRC says energy supplied to hotels, inns and similar establishments is standard-rated, at 20% VAT. Self-catering holiday lets and holiday caravans are treated differently, and their energy can qualify for a lower rate. If you run both, it's worth checking that each one is billed correctly.
Your usage figures
Contracts are priced on how much energy you use in a year. If you've added rooms or lengthened your season, the figures your contract is based on may be out of date.
Your water bill
Accommodation uses a lot of water, and most businesses in England and Scotland can choose their water retailer. We can check your water too.

Questions hotel and holiday let owners ask us
Can a hotel pay less VAT on energy?
No. HMRC says fuel and power supplied to hotels, inns or similar establishments is standard-rated, so they pay VAT at the standard 20%.
We run holiday lets. Is our energy treated differently?
Often, yes. Self-catering holiday accommodation counts as qualifying use, so its energy can get a lower rate of VAT. Your supplier needs a VAT declaration before it can apply it.
Can you check our water as well?
Yes, if you're in England or Scotland. One check covers electricity, gas and water.
Will switching disturb our guests?
No. Your supply stays on during the switch, so your guests won't be disturbed. The only thing that changes is the company that bills you.
